Edith M. "Edie" Amos, 88, of Spanish Fort, Baldwin County, AL, passed away Tuesday, August 20, 2013, at Thomas Hospital, Fairhope, AL. She had been a resident of Westminster Village and a member of Spanish Fort United Methodist Church since 2009.
A native of Salamanca, NY, Edie was the daughter of two Salvation Army officers. Following the death of her father when she was eight years old, she moved with her mother and siblings to Painesville, OH, a picturesque town on the southern shore of Lake Erie, where she joined the United Methodist Church of Painesville at age 15. Upon graduation, she married her high school sweetheart, Troy F. Amos. Early in her marriage, Edie worked as assistant credit manager and in payroll departments for several companies. But her main focus was as a devoted wife and homemaker for 63 years. Troy was employed at Diamond Shamrock and, later, Bank One of Painesville, retiring in 1988. For the next 20 years, the couple wintered in a retirement community in McAllen, TX. She and Troy were activity directors for Paradise Park in McAllen, where she also produced their photo directory. One of her special projects through the years was ensuring that all residents of a Painesville retirement home received birthday and other holiday cards. Troy died in 2008, after which Edie moved to Spanish Fort, AL, to be near her daughter. At Westminster Village she found new enjoyment in life with her very special gentleman friend, Col. Richard E. "Dick" Fitzhugh. They were nearly inseparable for four years. Always active, as late as April of this year she traveled to south Florida, visited Epcot and danced at her granddaughter Kara's wedding.
Edie was preceded in death by her husband, Troy Forrest Amos; parents, Rev. Gottlieb Frederick Orf and Adjutant Henrietta Fox Orf; and brother, Donald Orf. Survivors include three children: Robert (Kaye) Amos of Charlotte, NC, Gary (Jackie) Amos of Cuyahoga Falls, OH, and Debbie (Roy) Isbell of Spanish Fort, AL.; nine grandchildren: David (Kennedy) Amos of Mt. Pleasant, NC, Marc (Valerie) Amos of Concord, NC; Scott (Ida) Amos of Medina, OH, Shawn (Jackie) Amos of Bay Village, OH, Seth (Nisha) Amos of Norton, OH, Kara (Dan) Dodge of Boynton Beach, FL, Alex Amos of Akron; Matthew Isbell of Atlanta, GA, and Katie Isbell of Rolla, MO; nine great-grandchildren: Lorelei, Annabelle; Rachel, Jacobi; Isaac, Madison Rose; Selah, Alyssa Ann & Katelyn; one sister, Miriam "Mimie" (Ralph) Miller; sisters-in-law Edwina "Binnie" Orf, Nancy Amos, Sandy Amos; and nieces and nephews: Kathy Miller, Kim Miller Ackley, Tracey Amos Woidtke, Mike Amos, Rick Amos, Kelly Amos, Susan Amos Hackley.
