Susan M. Keyes was born in Monroe County, Kentucky, the daughter of William and Jane Keyes. Both parents were born in Virginia. Her father was a blacksmith.
Susan married Benjamin Howard Boone on January 1, 1867 in Missouri. Benjamin returned to Missouri after his military service for the CSA in Texas.
After their marriage, Susan and Benjamin relocated to Texas in 1868. Susan and Benjamin Boone had several children. They are enumerated on the 1870 census for Precinct 1, McKinney, Collin, Texas, with son James, age 2 and John, age 4 months.
The Boone's moved to Cooke County, Texas where they are enumerated on the 1880 census with son James, age 12, son John, age 10, and a baby (Annie) 2 months old. Also in the household was John Boone, age 36, the brother of Benjamin along with, James, age 80 (Benjamin's father).
A fourth child, Benjamin Howard Boone, Jr. is buried in the Fairview Cemetery at Gainesville, Texas on September 17, 1899.
The 1900 US Census for Cooke County, Texas states that Susan had 6 children, with only 1 living (Annie).
Susan helped raise two of her grandchildren, Robert Howard and Grace Boone after the death of their father, James W. Boone.
After Benjamin's death in 1925, Susan applied for and was granted a pension for his service in the Confederacy during the Civil War.
Susan left a will in which she named her daughter, Annie Coker, and 3 of her grandchildren, Claude Boone, Wesley Boone and Grace Locey. She left each of them $1.00. Susan did not mention the grandson, Bennie Lucian Dickens, who was in her household in 1920. Susan left the remainder of her property to her beloved grandson, Robert Howard Boone. The will was signed with her mark and witnessed by. F. M Johnson, Jr.
Susan's obituary mentions her grandson, Robert Howard Boone and one daughter (Annie), of California. I have it posted to this memorial.
