James T. Abshire born 3 June 1844 Roanoke Virginia, moved with his family in 1860 to Indiana, where he enlisted 18 Sep. 1861 at the age of 17 served 3 years 5 month with Company F., 2nd Indiana Cavalry during the Civil war as a Private. In Dec. 1861 he and the 2nd Indiana Cavalry moved to Kentucky with the Army of the Ohio.
Battles that Company F, 2nd Indiana Cavalry were engaged in include:
Skirmish Boling Green, Occupation of Nashville, Battle of Shiloh, Battle of Perryville, Battle of Stone River, Battle of Chickamauga, Defense of Nashville and Chattanooga Railroad.
The 2nd Indiana Cavalry, F Company was featured in Harpers Weekly, 31st Oct. 1863.
Private Abshire was captured by the rebels in the Atlanta Campaign in 1864 while crossing a river, he was held in the Confederate prisons of Andersonville, Georgia and Salisbury, North Carolina and was exchanged in 1865 on 14 Jan. 1865.
