Mary was the daughter of Donatus and Amanda Lucretia (Bradshaw) Haufle and was born October 10, 1879 at Strawberry Point, Clayton County, Iowa. Mary had eight brothers and sisters: George William, Ella Annette, Mabel Nona, Josept Gilbert, Eddie Elmer, Leon Monroe, Clarence Eugene and Claude Vernon. She married Wesley Allen Carpenter on November 5, 1897 at Ness City, Ness County, Kansas. Wesley was born June 29, 1874 at Audibon County, Iowa. It is interesting to note that her younger sister Ella Annette married Wesley's brother William Columbus Carpenter the next year. The couple had two children: Edna Mildred, born August 3, 1898 in Ness County; and Edmund Ralph, born July 22, 1900, also in Ness county. Mary and Wesley lived in Ness Couty, Kansas near the town of Brownell until 1914 when they moved to Chanute, Kansas. Mary began writing poetry at the age of forty-five. In five years she had written 200 poems and 100 of them had been printed in papers and magazines. Her biography was in "Who's Who in America" in 1948. Mary died in Chanute, June 13, 1948. She passed quietly away as she was talking to members of her family. She was in the hospital at the time. She is buried in the Elmwood Cemetery in Chanute, Neosho County, Kansas. Wesley died September 9, 1964 at Chanute and is also buried there.
