He had eleven brothers and sisters. John lived for less than five years, having died of "inflammation of the brain" in July of 1863. He is buried at Garretson Cemetery near Volga, Clayton County, Iowa. His father Joseph, brother Benjamin and sister Elmena are also interred here.
