John was the son of Joseph and Caroline (Freeman) Bradshaw and was born September 18, 1858 near the hamlet of Volga City, Sperry Township, Clayton County, Iowa on the family farm. He had eleven brothers and sisters. John lived for less than five years, having died of "inflammation of the brain" in July of 1863. He is buried at Garretson Cemetery near Volga, Clayton County, Iowa. His father Joseph, brother Benjamin and sister Elmena are also interred here.
