Homer was born at Volga City, Clayton County, Iowa on September 5, 1860, the son of Homer and Betsy (Freeman) Butler. He spent his childhood in Sperry Township, Clayton County. He had five brothers and sisters: Charlotte Ann, Wesley Morrow, Cerena Amanda, John (who was born and died in 1855; one source stated he choked to death on corn bread), and Nellie Bell. Homer was the next to youngest child. He went to Ness City, Kansas in June of 1884. On December 13, 1886 he married Cecilia L. Palmer. She was born December 6, 1868 in Clayton County, Iowa and was the daugther of C. Willard and Mary Ann (Freeman) Palmer. They were married at Haddam, Washington County, Kansas. The couple had four children: Abbie LaVerne, Leon, Eleanor Marie and Harold Willard. In March of 1889 they went to Yesler, King County, Washington (now part of the city of Seattle) and lived in that vicinity until 1918. They later moved to Charleston (Bremerton), Washington and in their old age moved to Yakima, Yakima County, Washington. They lived in the state of Washington for over forty years. Cecilia and Homer were cousins. Homer died of apoplexy (stroke), November 1, 1933 at the age of seventy-three years. He died at Yakima, Yakima County, Washington as is buried in Tahoma Cemetery. Services by the Reverend Charles Ghormley, November 3, 1933. His wife Cecilia died on January 28, 1931 at Yakima at the age of sixty-two. She also is buried in the Tahoma Cemetery.
