Birth: Aug. 15, 1822
Posey County
Indiana, USA
Death: unknown
Posey County

(Note: It is possible that Wilson and and Elizabeth (Downen) Jones of Posey County, Indiana had two children named Mary Jane.) There is solid evidence that a Mary Jane Jones, daughter of Wilson and Elizabeth Jones, was born in Posey County on August 15, 1822. This Mary Jane Jones married William B. Barton (with a "B") on November 19, 1837 in Posey County, Indiana. They had three children: Louisa J. (born 1840), Wilson G. (born 1842) and Samuel R. (born April of 1844). Mary Jane died arround 1845 in Posey County and her husband William married Nancy Green Duckworth on March 2, 1848. That marriage also took place in Posey County. They had six children. William married a third time to Katherine Webb. He died in 1892 in Posey County. There was a second Mary Jane Jones attributed to Wilson and Elizabeth. She was born in April 19, 1847 in Farmersville, Posey County. There is solid evidence through the U S Census that she was a daughter of Wilson and Elizabeth Jones. Could they have named this child in honor of the first Mary Jane who had passed away several years before? This Mary Jane married William Penn Barton. What relation he was to William B. can be anyone's guess. In 1820 the U S Census for Marrs Township identified five Barton families farming in the area: John Barton, Daniel Barton, William Barton, Alexander Barton and Willy Barton. A good deal of information has been gathered concerning this second Mary Jane. She is buried in the Phillips Cemetery located at Farmersville, Posey County, Indiana. Where the first Mary Jane is interred has not been confirmed; however, the fact that her son Wilson and other member of the Jones' clan are buried in the Samuel Jones Cemetery/Graveyard, it is likely her grave is located there also. No headstone had been discovered, however. Her husband William B. Barton and his second wife Nancy are both buried in the Downen Cemetery north of the town of Mount Vernon.
