Ellen was the daughter of Robert and Margaret (Powell) Parks. She was born in Black Township, Posey County, Indiana in 1847. She had three younger brothers: William H. (born 1849), John (born 1851) and Thomas (born 1855). When Ellen was twenty years of age, she married Isaac Nelson Burlison on October 28, 1867 in Posey County. Nelson's father was Adam Burlison, a noted minister of the area. His daughter Mollie Burlison married Charles Frederick Givens (my great uncle). In the 1870 U S Census report of Black Township, Nelson Burlison was listed as being twenty-one years of age, a farmer, and having been born in Indiana. Living at home was Ellen (22), and son Adam (2). Other children were added to the family in succeeding years. By 1880 the Posey County census for Point Township shows Nelson (31), Ellen (spelled "Helen" age 33), and the following children: Charles (9) Adam (13), Elizabeth (5), Otis (7), Margaret (3). Why Charles was not listed in the 1860 census is unusual, but it would seem he was born in 1871. Adam's birthdate may have be listed correctly, having his birthdate soon after his parents were married. Adam married Ida Jacobs in January 21, 1889. He reported that he was born in 1867, so there is some confusing information on his and Charles' birthdates. Ellen and Nelson also had a daughter named Anna who married John Grant on April 7, 1896. Their son Charles Burlison married Maggie Hale in White County, Illinois on December 11, 1905. It would appear that Ellen died before March of 1883 because at that time Nelson remarried. There is no record that has been found recording the date or place of Ellen's burial, but it is assumed that she was interred in Miller Cemetery which is near the area where her parents established a homestead and where they are buried.

In memory of my cousin who was a niece of my great-great grandfather Daniel G. Parks. The Parks and the Burlisons were early settlers in southwestern Indiana and established farms in the mid-1800s.|
