Sarah Elizabeth Marthena (Duckworth) Biggs was the daughter of William and Elizabeth (Thompson) Duckworth, early pioneer settlers of Posey County, Indiana. Sarah was a niece of my great grandmother Elizabeth Duckworth Jones. She was born 15 January 1829 in Sullivan County, Indiana. It would appear that her father had established a farm in Jackson Township a few miles north of other members of the Duckworth, Jones, Biggs and Givens families which arrived in southwestern Indiana in the early 1800s. When Sarah was sixteen she married Martin Biggs in Vigo County, Indiana. Martin was born in 1822 in Kentucky and died June 28, 1906. Her wedding date was 13 November 1845. Martin and Sarah were farmers in Sullivan County for many years. However, the U S Census of 1880 records his occupation of that of a grocer. The census of 1900 records that he was a day laborer so it appears he had given up farming as a living. Sarah's older sister Nancy married (1) Charles Medley and (2) Nathan C. Biggs. Martin and Nathan were brothers. It is interesting to note that her older brother William Jackson Duckworth married Eleanor Harriet Biggs and it has been reported that William died on the Biggs' farm. Sarah and Martin had ten children, nine of which have been identified: William Jackson, John Thomas, Margaret Angeline, Joseph Hanna, Rachel Melissa, Perry Alonzo, Robert Marian, Arazine and Lydia Ann. Robert and Arazine died as infants. The tenth child has not been identified. (The 1900 census records that Sarah had ten childen, six who were living in 1900,) After her husband died in 1906, she spent her senior years in the village of Atwood in Piatt County living with her daughter Lydia, a public school teacher. Sarah died 22 September 1917 at the age of 88 at Atwood, Piatt County, Illinois and is buried in the Mackville Cemetery.
