Ella was born at Roseville, California, the daughter of Robert Duckworth and Sarah Ann (Givens) Jones on March 13, 1873. She attended school there. In the summer of 1888, when she was fifteen years of age, she moved with her family to Okanogan County, Washington Territory where her parents established a homestead near the mining town of Ruby. One year after they arrived in Okanogan country, she met and married Frederick William "Frank" Brown, the owner of a store in Ruby and sixteen years her senior. Around 1895 they moved to Canada where they established their home and raised three children. In 1924 Frank and Ella moved to Oakland, California where they spent the rest of their lives.
