Obituary of Martha Ann Tuck Beck

Mrs. Martha Ann Tuck Beck was born near Agency, Buchanan County, MO, on January 19, 1871. Her parents were Polk D. Tuck & Martha Ann Riley. In the community of her birth, she grew to young womanhood. In her 16th year she became the bride of an energetic young man of the same neighborhood, Thomas Jefferson Beck. The date of the wedding was September 20, 1886. Soon after marriage the young couple came to Cass County, locating in the vicinity of Raymore. Most of their married life was lived in the northwest part of the county near Raymore and Peculiar. A little more than twelve years ago they moved to a farm near Lone Tree. In the spring of 1936 the family came to Harrisonville, where they spent their closing days. Mr. Beck died July 8, 1936. The subject of this sketch passed away at the family home on West Washington Street, Monday evening, February 1, 1943, at 11:15 o'clock.
Mrs. Beck was ill only a few hours. She had felt unusually well for several weeks and had frequently remarked to loved ones about her good health during the winter. While she had been bothered recently with some cold complications, she was nevertheless active about the home. She had attended to some light work on Monday and after a hearty evening meal retired for the night's rest. Shortly after she retired members of the family were alarmed at her breathing. Entering the bedroom they discovered she was seriously ill. A Physician was soon at her side with emergency treatment, but she had passed beyond the reach of human aid. The end came quickly and peacefully, and her immortal spirit entered into rest.
She was the Mother of two children, both daughters. One of these died in infancy. The other one, Mrs. Thomas (Lula) Fitzmaurice, of the home, survives. She leaves behind also her son-in-law, Thomas Fitzmaurice of Cheyenne, WY, a granddaughter, Martha Lou, a senior in the local high school and her aged step-mother, Mrs. Mary E. Tuck, of San Bernadino, CA. Living are two half-sisters in CA & six half-brothers, two in OK, two in CO and two in CA; other relatives in Agency, St. Joseph, Kansas City & a large number of friends.
Mrs. Beck became a Christian about 1910 and united with the Coleman Baptist Church. In this fellowship she continued to the end. She was a happy, congenial, modest Christian woman. She loved her home & her neighborn & found her highest joy in serving others. Now that she has gone she will be greatly missed by loved ones in the home, & by devoted friends which she made in the various communities where she lived.
The funeral service was held at the Peculiar Baptist Church, Friday afternoon, Feb 5 at 3 o'clock, being conducted by the Rev. Geo. C. Monroe of Harrisonville. Burial was in the family lot in the Peculiar cemetery.
