Lucy Navarette Amavisca went home to be with our Lord on Monday, January 10, 2011, she passed away at her home with her family by her side. Lucy was part of the original pioneer families that arrived in Yuma. She was born on May 4, 1916 and was the sixth daughter of Guadalupe Navarette and Transito Armenta Navarette.
A Yuma native, she grew up at the family's stockyard on 24th and 3E. She comes from a line of 6 sisters who are now all deceased. She attended the old school house that was across the street from the old library.
Lucy's family soon moved to the big adobe house that sits on 8th street and 14th avenue. This came to be the home that she would remain in for the next 70 years until her death. She met the love of her life at the age of 12, Joseph Angel Amavisca and married him June 24, 1934. Four beautiful children soon followed, Lupe, George, Robert and Rachel. Lucy Amavisca had an exciting life in the Yuma Valley.
She opened her home to an Army family, and was a domestic housewife and did the laundry for the Italian prison. Lucy had a huge heart. At different times in her life, she would open her home to many families and orphaned children that had no place to stay. Lucy had a love for life and a strong belief in the Catholic Church. Lucy and her husband Joe were very active in the Immaculate Conception Church Parish. Together they were instrumental in planting the flowers around the church, as well as creating and caring for the landscaping of the church located on Avenue B.
