"SAM ARTHUR DIED TODAY"
"Would Have Been 93 Years Old Next August.
HIS 14 CHILDREN SURVIVE
First Death in Family Was That of Mrs. Arthur in 1916 - Lived in County Since 1871.

Samuel Arthur, 92 years old, passed quietly away at 4 o'clock this morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Nels J. Fletcher, 945 Parallel Street. He had been ill from rheumatism the last two years, and was brought to his daughter's home from his farm near Pardee last Monday. He is survived by every one of his fourteen children, the oldest being 66 years old and the youngest 50. The first death in the family was that of Mrs. Arthur October 28, 1916.
Funeral services will be held Sunday and burial will be in the Pardee cemetery. Further funeral arrangements have not yet been made. All of the children are expected to attend the services.
Mr. Arthur was born in Blair county, Pa., August 2, 1826. In his boyhood he was a canal boy, driving the horses that pulled the heavy barges along the inland waterways which were almost as important to the freight traffic of that time as the railroads which soon began to spread over the country. But he soon felt the lure of the West, and came as far as Illinois when that was a somewhat new state. There, near Quincy, he met, wooed, won, and married Miss Sarah Hademan, and the two took up the problems of life together; formed a partnership which run far beyond [their] golden half century mark, and ... attained success not to be ... or reckoned by dollar ... They lived for a time on a [farm] in Cays County, Ill., locating later on a farm near Bushnell, Ill., where they lived until coming to Kansas in 1871. In Illinois, also, were born eleven of their fourteen children. Ever after their marriage they lived on farms, for 45 years on the one near Pardee.
Since the death of his wife and companion for 65 years, Mr. Arthur had lived alone on his farm one mile west of Pardee. His son, Walter, lived on an adjoining farm, and looked after his father's every need, with the help of the other children,l who were very attentive. A good housekeeper was provided for him, and he was better contented on the old home place than with his children. He is also survived by 52 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
Following are the 14 children: Mrs. David Hosler, Greenwood county, Kas.; Mrs. Will Holland, Kansas City, Kas.; Will Arthur, Lawrence, Kas.; Tom Arthur, Isham, Wyo.; Charles Arthur, Arkansas; Mrs. Addie Dochow, Jennings, Kas.;Dan Arthur, Osborne, Kas.; Mrs. Jake Elliott, Mrs. Nels Fletcher and Mrs. Clay Metz, Atchison; Walter Arthur, living near the home place; Joe Arthur, Nortonville; Mrs. George Radcliff, Kansas City, Kas., and Herbert Arthur, of Cummings.
Funeral services will be held from the Methodist church at Pardee at 2:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon, and burial will be in the Pardee cemetery. The procession will lave the N. J. Fletcher home at 2 o'clock. The family requests there be no flowers."

E-mail communication on 02-07-2013:
I am a former Atchison county resident whose grandmother kept obituaries in an old book. I found an obituary for Sam Arthur in that book and am attaching it to this email. Perhaps you could use the information to add to Mr Arthur's biography. He was a true Atchison county pioneer and led an interesting life. Thank you for your consideration.
