Dorothy M. Cox
A Mass of Christian Burial celebrating the life of Dorothy Cox, age 85, of Glencoe was held Wednesday, February 16, 2005 at the Church of St. Pius X in Glencoe. Officiating was Fr. Eugene Lozinski. Organist was Sister Elizabeth Gruenes. The song leader was Joanne Pohland. Music selections included "On Eagle's Wings", "Hear Us Almighty Lord", "Panis Angelicus", "Come To Her Aid", and "Here I Am Lord". Serving as casketbearers were Jonathan Cox, Daniel Cox, Mark Sanken, Randy Sigler, David Becker, and Gary Schreifels. Visitation and parish prayer service was held Tuesday evening at the Johnson-McBride Funeral Chapel in Glencoe.
Dorothy May Cox was born January 13, 1920 in East Grand Forks, MN, the daughter of Peter and Mabel (Cameron) Hammersmith. She was baptized and confirmed at the Catholic Church in East Grand Forks. She was the valedictorian of her graduating class from the Sacred Heart High School in East Grand Forks. Dorothy attended business college in Butte, Montana.
On August 29, 1944 Dorothy was united in marriage to William Cox. The couple lived in California for a short period until moving to Minnesota when William was discharged from the service. They owned and operated the Valley Variety Store in Browns Valley until 1962. From 1964 until her retirement she worked at Griffith Hardware and Implement in Graceville. In 1997 she moved to an apartment in Glencoe to be closer to her son, Michael and since fall of 2000 she has been a resident at the Glencoe Regional Health Services Long Care Unit. She was a past member of the Legion Auxiliary of Browns Valley. She was a member of the Daughters of Isabella and Coucil of Catholic Woman. Dorothy enjoyed fishing and was an avid sports fan. She especially enjoyed following the Twins, Vikings, and Glencoe Panthers.
On Sunday, February 13, 2005 Dorothy Cox entered her eternal rest at the Glencoe Regional Health Services at the age of 85 years and one month.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, three sisters, and one brother.
Dorothy is survived by her three children: Geraldine Piechowski (husband, Curtis) of Sebring, FL; William Cox (wife, Collette) of Fergus Falls, and Michael Cox (wife, Nancy) of Glencoe; grandchildren, Jill Mortonson (husband, Jeff), William Cox, Jr., Kathleen Cox, Jacqueline Cox, Jonathan Cox, Daniel Cox; three great grandchildren as well as other relatives and friends.
