Birth: 1838, Germany
Death: Aug. 18, 1862
Renville County
Minnesota, USA

Justine Koberstein was born to parents Ludwig and Caroline (nee Kapitski) Koberstein in Germany in 1838. She came to America in 1850-51 with her parents who settled in Newton, Marquette County, Wisconsin. Here she met Michael Boelter, a German native, and the two were married. In June of 1862 they moved to a claim in the southwest quarter of section 35, Flora Township in Renville County, MN. The area was known as the Middle Creek settlement. Many in the community were killed by Indians in an attack on August 18, 1862, the first day of the Dakota uprising. Michael survived, but Justine and their children were killed by the Indians. It is assumed that soldiers buried them on their claim, close to where they fell.
