Back in time to chapter 2 of this story, and we mentioned James, born to William and Ann in Stogursey.

As with many of the children, he was indentured to a local farmer. William and Ann were paid a sum of money for agreeing to indenture the children, and the responsibility for feeding the child was taken off the "poor book" and went to the farmer whom the child worked for, until the age of 21.

James was indentured to Mr John Hurman of Ropers on March 26th 1807 shortly before his 10th birthday, He would have been freed from his indenture in 1818. Whether he got assisted passage,or when and where he sailed from, we cannot find out, but what we do know is that he ended up in New York.

He applied for nationalisation on 5th Nov 1834 at the Marine Court NYC. His witness was a Isaac R Hune.

An Irish family sailed to USA also and the daughter of the family, Grace Stevens ended up as James wife in New York in 1836, but by 1835 had became the mother of his child, Samuel, born in Sullivan County, New York.

The family grew steadily,as James and Grace had ten children , as did the ranch they lived on. Richard and Edwin were born in Stockbridge, but William, Frederick, Clara,Charles and Orpha were born earlier in Whiteoak.
As the children grew up, they married into respectable local families, such as Van Buren, Wilson, and Hall to name but a few. Some stayed locally, some stayed locally
after marriage, but others moved around within the US, sometimes coming back to Michigan.

Samuel was pressed into fighting for the confederates during the civil war, being in Texas when war broke out.
At one time, James and grandson Willis (who had been born in Kansas, but returned to his fathers`home in Stockbridge, owned adjoining ranches and owned the land as far as the eye could see in every direction.

Of the children, Charles and wife and Richard and wife , moved to Oklahoma. A company was formed, "Binding and Stevens Seed Co" in Oklahoma. This evolved to a garden Centre in Tulsa also called "Binding & Stevens". This
company was still trading in 2002. It was run initially by the grandchildren of James & Grace.

Another of their children, Edwin, moved all round the US, before returning to Stockbridge to marry into another pioneering family, the Pullings.

By 1900, brothers Edwin and Frederick owned 210 acres between them, Frederick living in Whiteoak, and Edwin in the ranch built by his father in Stockbridge.

By 1916, James & Kate are still running their ranch of 80 acres, with 3 horses and 2 cattle. Willis Binding had retired and was still living in Stockbridge.

Over the next 100 years , the family spread out, many moving to California, but our attempts to find a "living" one to correspond with have been futile.

We have discovered biographies of Edwin and Willis Binding which will be posted on this site. I am sure that there is much more to be discovered to tell the story of 170
years of Bindings in the USA.
