EAST CARBON CITY/PUERTO DE SANTA MARIA, Spain - Maria Josefa Victoria Astorga Riera Heer, a strong brave woman lost a two year battle with ovarian cancer Nov. 22, 2001 at home.

Maria was bound and determined to try and win the fight, but it wasn't to be. Maria was and will be an inspiration to her family and friends. She was born in Puerto de Santa Maria, Spain March 5, 1943 to Manuel Astorga and Antonia Riera Astorga. Married Jerry Heer Sept. 5, 1962 in Puerto de Santa Maria, Spain while Jerry was stationed in the U.S. Navy.

Maria is survived by husband, Jerry Heer; daughter, Kris Heer and Abie Velasquez; joy of her life, granddaughter, Cheyanne; mother-in-law, Genevieve Heer; sister-in-law, Judy (Leslie) Hamilton, all of East Carbon; sister-in-law, Joan (Bud) Pilling, Price; special daughter-in-law, Janet, California, whom she thought the world of and loved very much; mother, Antonia Astorga, Puerto de Santa Maria, Spain; sister, Andrea and Pedro, Jerez de la Frontera, Spain; sister, Milogros, Madrid, Spain; sister-in-law, Maria, Puerto de Santa Maria, Spain; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Maria was preceded in death by son, Michael D. Heer; father-in-law, Ernest M. Heer, both of East Carbon; father, Manuel Astorga; brother, Alfonso Astorga; uncle, Enrique Astorga, all of Puerto de Santa Maria, Spain.

The family would like to thank some very special friends who provided excellent care during Maria's illness, Jeanna, Betty, Jackie, Judy and Valerie. The family thanks you very much. The family also wishes to thank Coram Health Care, Interwest Medical, Rocky Mountain Health Care and staff, and especially Darlene and Lorie. We would also like to thank Dr. Bott and his staff from Provo, Dr. Nichols, Dr. Cox and their staffs for an outstanding job caring for Maria. We couldn't have asked for better. Special thanks to Sherry King of Castleview Hospital for her excellent care of doing chemotherapy and for just being her friend.

Graveside service Tuesday, Nov. 27, 1 p.m., at the Valley View Cemetery, Sunnyside. Family and friends are welcome to join the family Tuesday at the cemetery under the direction of Mitchell Funeral Home of Price.
