Former Alaska resident Chell Lewis "Lewy" Bear, 65, of San Diego, died Oct. 18, 2004, at the San Diego Naval Hospital
following a short battle with cancer. Military memorial services were held Nov. 3 at Fort Rosecraus National Cemetery, Point Loma, Calif. No local services were planned.
Mr. Bear was born on June 24, 1939, in Missoula, Mont., the son of Chell and Maxine Bear. Mr. Bear came to Alaska in the fall of 1949. His family drove the Alaska Highway, and their Uncle Walt Bear of Fairbanks flew them to Kenai, as there was no road to Kenai from Anchorage. Mr. Bear attended elementary school in Kasilof and Kenai and high school in Kenai and Palmer. He graduated from Palmer High School in 1958. He left Alaska and joined the Navy in 1959, retiring as a senior chief after 30 years of service. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War. Mr. Bear was preceded in death by his parents; nephew, Chris Larsen; and Mr. Larsen's son, Silas.
Mr. Bear is survived by his son, Michael Bradburn and daughter-in-law, Monica; grandchildren, Lexie, Anne and Michael of San Diego; brother and sister-in-law, Ted and Carole Bear; sister, Carolyn Bradford; brother, Chris "Billy" Bear, all of Soldotna; nine nieces and nephews; eleven grandnieces and grandnephews; and one great-nephew. Arrangements were with National Cremation Service of San Diego.
