Memorial services for Martin A. HAGERSTRAND, 87, of Tahlequah, were held July 10, at the First Presbyterian Church of Tahlequah with Wilma MANKILLER, former chief of the Cherokee Nation speaking. Arrangements were under the direction of Hart Funeral Home of Tahlequah.
Mr. HAGERSTRAND was born November 10, 1911, in Chicago, Ill., the son of Earnest L. and Jennie PALM HAGERSTRAND, and he passed from this life July 7, 1999 in Fort Gibson, Okla.
Martin married Marion BROWN on February 2, 1946, in Tahlequah, Okla. A retired United Staes Army Colonel, he served his country from 1934-1960. Colonel HAGERSTRAND was well known for promoting tourism in northeastern Oklahoma and for his efforts to improve public understanding of Cherokee history. He also was founder and former director of the Cherokee National Historical Society, which produced the Trail of Tears drama at the center for many years, and served as president of the Five Civilized Tribes Museum in Muskogee.
He was deeply involved in the Presbyterian Church both locally and nationally.
Mr. HAGERSTRAND is survived by his wife, Marion; one son, Jack; one daughter, Nola, all of Okla; and many relatives, as well as a host of friends and loved ones.
