Orlo Aasen, 96, of Mayville, ND died Thursday, February 2, 2012 at the Luther Memorial Home in Mayville.

He was born March 5, 1915, in Hatton, ND, one of 10 children to Gilbert and Josephine (Coltom) Aasen. He attended school at Lindaas Country School. In 1942 he joined the US Navy, serving during WWII. He was on the USS Savannah when it was bombed in the Mediterranean Sea. While stationed in Philadelphia, PA, he met the love of his life, Margaret Ferris and the couple married 6 weeks later.

Orlo was in the trucking business, farmed for many years, and was part owner of the Mayville Elevator. He and Marge wintered in Arizona for 23 years, spent many fun filled summers at Lake Melissa and at their backyard pool. Orlo enjoyed singing "You Are My Sunshine" and "Hey, Good Lookin" to Marge. His favorite hobby in the summer was spending many hours working in the yard and keeping it ‘weed' free.

He was involved in many organizations throughout his life, including board member of Lindaas Country School, officer for American AAL, trustee at First American Lutheran Church, director for Federal Land Bank, and a lifetime member of the VFW.

Orlo was a disciple of God, with a very strong faith. He often said "If life on earth was perfect, we wouldn't need Heaven."

Orlo is survived by his wife of 67 years, Marge; 6 children, Bob (Patty) of Big Lake, MN, Ron (Jean) of Savage, MN, Jacquie (Gary) Winger of Mayville, Peggy Aasen of Devils Lake, ND, Wendy (Rick) Soholt of Mayville, and Pam (Jeff Schaefer) Beck of Grand Forks, ND; 17 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; sister, Donna Bakkum of Mayville; sister-in-law, Alice Aasen of Mayville; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his infant daughter, Pamela Grace; his parents; brothers, Earl, Ernest, Palmer, Gilly, Carl and Marlowe; and sisters, Adeline Ellingrud, and Inez Fiskum.

Memorials are preferred to Meadowlark at Luther Memorial Home, or First American Lutheran Church.
