Served in World War 2 from 1942-1944 Enlisted at age of 22. Hometown Pennsylvannia. Private First Class in the 1st Army division 18th Infantry Company B. Campaigns include North Africa, Sicily, and Normandy. Involved in the second wave of landings at Omaha Beach on June 6, 1944 Easy Red sector. Was shot and wounded in the Aachen Forest September 13, 1944 earned a purple heart along with a bronze and silver star. Lived to 86 years of age.
Chester G. Zyhowski, age 86, of Trafford, on Nov. 18, 2006. Husband of 60 years to Mildred Paich Zyhowski, father of Gregory (Terry) Zyhowski; grandfather of Gregory C. Zyhowski all of Shaler Twp. Brother of John Zyhowski of Trafford, Amelia Abadie of Penn Twp, Helen Jenets and Josephine Geibel, both of Maryland and the late Frank & Louis Zyhowski, Stella Mikulewicz and Kathryn Kepple. Chester was a Veteran of WWII with the US Army. He received a Purple Heart, Bronze Star and various campaign medals. He landed on Omaha Beach on D-Day and was wounded in the Aachen Forest in Germany. Friends received in the JOHN M. DOBRINICK FUNERAL HOME INC., 602 7th St. (Rt. 130) Trafford (412-372-3111) on Mon. 2-4 & 7-9 PM. Funeral Mass on Tues. 9:30 AM in the St. Regis Church, Trafford. Interment with military honors New St. Joseph Cemetery.
