It Is Well With My Soul
Jessie D. Spies, daughter of Benjamin and Alice (Morris) Spies, was born April 1, 1913 near Beaver Creek in Rock County, MN. She grew up there and graduated from Beaver Creek High School. Jessie married Frank Allen on June 22, 1933 on the South Dakota State Line near their farm in Minnesota. The couple lived in Beaver Creek for several years. They then moved to Omaha, NE where they lived from 1940 until 1945 while Frank worked on the Flight Line at Martin Aircraft building B-26 bombers during WW II.
The couple then moved back to Valley Springs, SD where they built their home in 1955. In Valley Springs she worked in the lumber yard office and also at the bank for several years. In 1998 the couple moved to Garretson, SD where they lived until Frank passed away on February 2, 2000.
Over the years, Jessie enjoyed gardening, crocheting, cooking and giving piano lessons to people around the area. She was a pianist for over 60 years. Jessie was also the secretary treasurer of the Pleasant View Cemetery in Valley Springs, SD from 1976 until 1993.
Grateful for having shared her life are her daughter, Bette Jacobson; grandchildren, Elizabeth (Ron) Nelson, and Philip (Alice) Jacobson; and great-grandchildren, Lauren and Morgan Nelson and Ian Jacobson, all of Sioux Falls.
Jessie was preceded in death by her parents, Benjamin and Alice Spies; husband, Frank Allen; daughter, Judy Layne; and sisters, Doris Eads and Ruth Olson.
