Found a Skeleton.
On Saturday morning it was reported about the streets that a skeleton of a man had been found in an old ice house in the rear of J. H. Hallett's place, and there was considerable speculation for some time as to who it was and how it came there, all sorts and manners of crimes being conjured up in the imagination of the average citizen. An investigation, however, relieved the finding of all mystery whatever. The skeleton was not found at the place stated above, but on the bank of the river down on the flat where the old ice house used to stand years ago. It was enclosed in a box and had been buried, but the high water this spring had cut the bank down so that the box was exposed to view, and was discovered by some boys who opened the box and finding a skeleton notified the police. Officer Hurley and Coroner Dean went down and got the skeleton and re-buried it. That it was an Indian there is no doubt, as there was long black hair, such as Indians wear, and the box contained an Indian pipe, beads, and other Indian trinkets that are buried with their dead.
