Johanna was born to Benjamin and Elizabeth Bowden, neighbors of the Dawe's in Northill, Cornwall. She was the oldest child of a large family. Her father was a farm laborer until the time of her marriage September 3, 1840. Her father died a few years later.
The couple moved to near-by Linkinhorne where they raised their family. Her in-laws had also moved here. Her other family members were not far, as others had moved to the village.
Twenty years after their youngest child was born, the family migrated to north Yorkshire. All the families went, so they maintained their closeness. They settled in the towns around N. Skelton not far from the sea. The men had beene tin miners in Cornwall and there was a need for their talents in the iron mines.
When Susan died, she was buried at St. Margaret's, an Anglican Church in Brotton.
