Mr. Achterhoff, New Era, Dies

Shelby - Jake Achterhoff, 53, a resident of New Era, died at his home Friday after a long illness.

He was born June 28, 1907, at New Era, and there married Myrtle Beardsley Oct. 17, 1931.

Mr. Achterhoff farmed until 1946. From that year until 1956 he worked in Muskegon factories, Shaw Walker and Sheldon's. In 1956 he went to work for the New Era Canning Company until illness forced his retirement in 1958.

Surviving are his wife; two sons, Edward of North Muskegon, and Donald at home; five daughters, Mrs. Dolores Walker of Whitehall, Mrs. Anna Jean Jones if Picher, Okla., Mrs. Betty Hoffman of New Era, Mrs. Lula Belle Horter, Cedar Springs, and Mrs. Patsy Frase of Portsmouth, Virginia; a brother, John of Muskegon; two sisters, Mrs. Gertrude Grotenhouse of Holland, Michigan, and Mrs. Johanna Vanete of New Era; 15 grandchildren.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Cooper Funeral Home, Shelby. The Rev. K.L. Springstead will officiate. Burial will be at New Era Cemetery.
