1821 State of Missouri Created
The land that is now Missouri was acquired from France as part of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803 and became known as the Missouri Territory on June 4, 1812. The southeastern portion of the territory was admitted into the union as the State of Missouri the 24th state on August 10, 1821. As other states were created from it's huge territorial boundaries, Missouri settled on its present shape as it is found today.

"In the name of God amen. The twenty fourth day of September in the year of our Lord one thousand eighteen hundred and fifty-nine. I Martin Johnson of the County of Gasconade gentleman being through the blessings of God in a sound state of mind and memory but calling to mind the frail tenure of this life and that it is appointed to all men once to die do make & ordain this my last will and testament that is to say I give bequeath and disperse of all in the manner and preparation here following; First, I will my soul to God who gave it. I want to be laid away in a plain and decent manner. As little mourning & weeping as possible all my just and honest debts paid. I bequeath to my son, William a certain black horse if got. If not a choice of two mare. I bequeath to my son Wilson and John Thomas one of the suckling calfs apiece. I bequeath to my beloved wife all my real estate & personal during her natural life or widowhood. I furthermore wish and desire that the county court should have nothing more to do with this will than prove it up. Martin Johnson
