MAPLETON, Iowa - James A. Baagoe, 94, of Mapleton passed away Friday, May 13, 2011, at his home.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Peter's United Church of Christ, with Harvey Hanson officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery at Mapleton, with military graveside honors provided by American Legion Loren Hollister Post 496 of Mapleton. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. Monday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. followed by a Masonic service, at Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton.

James Albert Baagoe was born Nov. 13, 1916, at Bismarck, N.D. Soon after birth, he was adopted by a caring couple, his father, Mads Baagoe and his mother, Besse (Scorbaugh) Baagoe. The family lived at Mapleton, where he remained a lifelong resident. He grew up in the area and graduated from Mapleton High School with the class of 1934. While in high school he became a charter member of the Future Farmers of America. He served his country in the U.S. Army in World War II.

Jim's life's work was in farming and he also worked at Wilson Trailer in Onawa, Iowa, as a welder for a number of years.

On Aug. 9, 1949, Jim was united in marriage to Catherine Frances Collins at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Danbury, Iowa. After a long teaching career and lovingly caring for her family, Catherine passed away on March 21, 1994. Jim continued to live on the Baagoe family farm for a time and moved into Mapleton in 2002, where he lived until his passing.

He was a longtime member of St. Peter's United Church of Christ in Mapleton, American Legion Loren Hollister Post 496 of Mapleton, and the Masonic Lodge. Above all, Jim was a dedicated husband, father and grandfather. Anyone who knew Jim recognized his quiet, kind and supportive demeanor, always being positive, generous and pleasant.

Survivors include one daughter and her husband, Kathy and Jim Bernard of Anthon, Iowa; four sons, Bill Baagoe and his wife, Jan of Sioux City, Kent Baagoe of Las Vegas, Nev., Kevin Baagoe and his companion, Linda Morris of Indianapolis, Ind., and Garry Baagoe and his wife, Lisa of Runnells, Iowa; eight grandchildren, Chris Baagoe, Jenna Baagoe, Amanda Baagoe, Adam Bernard and his wife, Chelsea, Andrea Bernard, Caitlyn Baagoe, Collin Baagoe and Cody Baagoe; one brother and his wife, Martin and Mary Ann Christensen of DeKalb, Ill.; and three sisters, Katherine Kruse of Soldier, Iowa, Juanita Thies of Mapleton, and Laura Fitzpatrick of Danbury, Iowa.

Along with his beloved wife, Jim was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Brian Baagoe; and one brother, Norman Christensen.
