James J. Burrell, 86, of Murphy, passed away peacefully Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2010, after a series of illnesses.
He was a native of Cherokee County, and the son of the late A.E. and Eva Crow Burrell.
James was raised in western North Carolina and North Georgia, leaving in his teens to work with his older brothers in Michigan prior to Wolrld War II. He enlisted in the Army at Fort Custer, Mich., in 1943.
While stationed at Fort Riley, Kan., he met and married Lila Mae Parsons in 1944. Jim and Lila moved from Kansas to Michigan and back several times through the next few years, finally settling down on an eastern Kansas farm in 1952.
He worked for Bayer Construction Co. in Manhattan, Kan., for nearly 30 years and was proud of his expert ability with large equipment. Construction jobs took him all over the state of Kansas including work on several missile bases in the 1960s.
Jim liked western movies, historical books and history of America. Many evenings around the supper table he enjoyed discussing Civil War battles, World War II and heroes of both. He earned his GED in 1975.
As his two girls were growing up, Jim enjoyed their school and 4-H activities, and later he was proud of his two grandchildren as they pursued their education. He also loved sharing stories of his childhood in the Smoky Mountains and was so pleased to spend his final year in the mountains he loved with his dear friend, Dorothy Merritt.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by Lila Burrell; two sisters, Hannah and Cindy; two brothers, Dewey and Charles; and his longtime companion, Dorothy Merritt.
He is survived by two daughters, Delila Jean "Jeanne" Thyfault and her husband, Harlan of Fayetteville, Ark., and Judy Adel Ross and her husband, Robert, of Bennington, Kan.; two grandchildren, Chris Carlson and his wife, JoAnn, Sara Lanning and her husband, Shane; three great-grandchildren, Ashley Carlson, Heather Carlson and Chase Lanning; as well as two brothers, Wayne Burrell and Hayes Burrell; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 25, at Townson-Rose Funeral Home Chapel in Murphy. The Rev. Alan Harris will officiate. Burial will be in Shady Grove Baptist Church cemetery in Murphy with military graveside rites conducted by the VFW Post, 10222, Joe Miller Elkin American Legion Post 96 and DAV Chapter 73, Hayesville American Legion Post 532 and Hayesville VFW Post 6812 (Allison-Bristol). Pallbearers will be David Burrell, Travis Burrell, Johnny Burrell, Jeff Frady, Adam Dockery and Toby Beaver.
The family will receive friends from 12:30-2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 25, at Townson-Rose Funeral Home in Murphy.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be in memory of James J. Burrell to the Cherokee County Historical Society, 205 Peachtree St., Murphy, NC 28906.
