On the evening of July 4, 1924 the steamship Three Rivers of the Baltimore and Virginia Steamboat Company was travelling along the Chesapeake Bay towards Baltimore when it caught fire off Cove Point. Ten people were killed in the tragedy, including five boys who were members of the Evening Sun Newsboys Band. The five boys, Vernon E. Jefferson, Nelson A. Miles, Walter Clark Millikin, Thomas A. Pilker, Jr., and Lester Alfred Seligman are all buried in front of the memorial. The Evening Sun newspaper erected this memorial to their memory.
