General Lewis was the husband of Mary Rushing and son of Wiley Lewis and Rhoda Cannon. He was born circa 1845 in Georgia. General entered service in the Confederate Army in Co. K, 47th Georgia Volunteer Infantry on 21 Feb. 1863 and was discharged in Oct. 1864 in Whiteville, South Carolina due to typhoid fever. In 1868 he married Mary Rushing. He died on 15 Nov. 1912 in Bulloch County and is buried in Emmaus (Red Hill) Church in Claxton, Evans County, Georgia.
