Martha and her brothers lived in the same house. In 1858, the brothers Stephen, James, Felix and Jefferson left Tennessee and moved to Barry County, Missouri. Descendants remember that Martha watched the family leave in a covered wagon drawn by oxen. A milk cow had been broken and tied to the wagon so the family could have milk on the trip. This was a sad day for the orphan Martha, watching her family leave and never knowing when or if she would ever see them again.
Years later, brother James Wesley Burnett made the trip twice to visit them. Brother John was then head of house and Martha continued living there with him and his wife Martha Rust Burnett and their children until her marriage.
On June 24, 1880, Martha Jane Burnett was united in marriage in Grundy County, Tennessee to WILLIAM ILEY CRABTREE, a widower with two daughters. William was born January 11, 1830 in Tennessee and died June 23 1925. His parents were natives of North Carolina.
