Death: Jan. 1, 1987

Born in Minneapolis where he attended Central H.S. and developed talents in both writing and drawing. He published his first prize-winning book while still a high school student- creating its illustrations, and printing finished copies on his own home press. It was recognized in local literary circles and this encouraged his life-long interests in drawing, printing and self-publishing. He entered the University of Minnesota in 1922, graduating with B.A.(Hist.1927)and L.L.B.(Law 1929) where he was an active member of Chi Delta Phi and Alpha Tau Omega fraternities. He illustrated pieces in both the campus yearbook (The Gopher) and his fraternity's national newspaper. His cartoons & caricatures of fellow students, faculty and staff won him recognition on campus. But harking to the counsel of his father, Hennepin Co. Judge Edmund A. Montgomery, young Ed turned his energies to the law and his law practice.
He was longtime partner in Minneapolis firm of Richards, Montgomery, Cobb, later Bassford, Hecht, and Lockhart where his specialty was Municipal and Corporate law. He was City Attorney of St. Louis Park, MN, for more than 20 years. Parallel to his law practice, he continued his avocation of drawing and printmaking; his art work won several prizes and was galleried in Chicago, New York and London. He published several booklets and collection series, including one of local historic sites and another of the London Law Courts, another on historic buildings of Carleton College. He was a 50 year member of the Hennepin Co. and Minnesota State Bar Associations, retiring only in 1980. An avid gardener at the home he designed in St. Louis Park, MN, he was President of the Minneapolis Men's Garden Club and known for spending hours in his garden before and after his workday, seven days a week during the peak summer season. A man of many talents, with an artistic bend that was expressed in the many works he shared.
