The following obituary was published in the "Lincoln Sentinel" at Lincoln (Lincoln County), Kansas on October 19, 1950:

Ella Burkepile
Rachel Ellen Parsons, eldest daughter of Charles and Sarah Parsons, was born July 16, 1872, at Pontiac, Mich., and passed away in Lincoln, Kan., Oct. 11, 1950, at the age of 78 years, 2 months and 27 days.
With her parents, she came to Kansas in 1881, locating in Junction City. Five years later, in 1886, they moved to Lincoln county where she resided the remainder of her life.
Oct. 10, 1893, she was married to C.E. Burkepile. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1943 and Mr. Burkepile passed away in 1944.
Mrs. Burkepile was a member of the Presbyterian church and attended services whenever possible.
She is survived by two foster children, Carl Tanner and Mrs. Violet Harlow of Lincoln; six grandchildren; four sisters, Mrs. Annie Hood, Mrs. Lottie Wild, Barnard; Mrs. Mary Anderson, Denmark; Mrs. Dora Wild, Lincoln; three brothers, Will Parsons, Minneapolis, Kan.; John Parsons in California and Carl Parsons, Hot Springs, S.D. A host of other relatives and friends also mourn their loss.
The funeral of Mrs. Burkepile was held Friday, Oct. 13, in the Lincoln Presbyterian church, conducted by the minister, the Rev. Louis Meek. Interment was made in the family plot at Pinon [Union Valley] cemetery.
-----------------------------------------------
Note that she and her husband, in middle age, took in two foster children of very young age and raised them as their own. The circumstances of how this came about are not known, but the children were put aboard a train at Kansas City to be met by the Burkepile's and taken to their home near Denmark.
