Melinda Catherine daughter of Malinda Allison & Milton Kelley.

Melinda Catherine was born while her parents were serving in the Mormon Battalion Company A under C. Jefferson Hunt. Her Uncle Nickolas Kelley & his wife Sarah were also in Company A. Her father Milton Kelley died of pneumonia November 4, 1846 at Pueblo, Colorado, while the sick detachment of the Mormon Battalion were in Pueblo. This group traveled to Utah, arriving just 5 days after Brigham Young entered the Salt Lake Valley (see record below).

Mormon Battalion Sick Detachments (1847)

Departure: 24 May 1847
Arrival: 29 July 1847

Company Information:
Three sick detachments of disabled men in the Mormon Battalion, along with some women and children, spent the winter in 1846-47 at Pueblo, Colorado. An advance party of 13 soldiers met Brigham Young's company on 4 July while trailing livestock. The remainder of the sick detachments left Pueblo on 24 May and, in company with some Saints from Mississippi, arrived in Salt Lake City five days after Brigham Young had entered the valley
