John Henry Bauer, Sr., was born, lived, and died in the city of St. Louis, Missouri. Childhood home was 130 Second Street, and adult home was 4224 Manchester Avenue. He was a teamster, hauling beer by horse and wagon, for the Anheuser-Busch Brewery, a job he may have retired early from, for health reasons, since his death cert indicates he was employed as a night watchman when he died at age 44 from a kidney problem.
Around 1893, he married Elizabeth ("Lizzie") M. Bertch (b. 18 Dec 1878, d. 27 Feb 1938). The couple had 2 sons, John Henry Bauer, Jr. (b. 28 Mar 1908, d. 21 Jan 1981) and George Jacob Bauer (b. 16 Jul 1909, d. 16 Jul 1997).
John Henry Bauer, Sr.'s parents were both born in pre-unified Germany, immigrated as children, then met and married on 17 Nov 1864 in Mascoutah, St. Clair County, Illinois. His father was Heinrich ("Henry") Bauer, born 23 Mar 1841 in Village of Mußbach, Canton of Neustadt, County of Frankenthal, Kingdom of Bavaria. Heinrich immigrated at age 6 with his family, initially settling in Illinois, but later moving to St. Louis. John's mother was Sophia Tewes, born 1844 in Hannover, Lower Saxony.
