Siblings - Leonard, Terry , Harry, Ronald, Queenie, Gertrude, Sadie, Betty, John, Marie, Laurie, Charles
*Grew up in London England.
* Nicknamed "Doll" supposedly because she was a sickly baby, and was very tiny like a "Doll". I was told she was born with a hole in her heart, but she never had problems with it as an adult.
* Lived through the London Blitz of WWII. Sometimes she hid in the "Underground" (subway) during air attacks (once she was with her Sister and baby Niece who had to sleep in an opened suitcase for the night). She told me that there were times when they would be under attack all night, and in the morning they would leave their house to find the other side of the street in flames. She also said that she could remember walking to work through rubble , passing buildings that were bombed the night before. (She worked in a factory that made propaganda leaflets that were dropped by airplane on the enemy).
Her Father was an Air Raid Warden (He would dig the bodies out from the rubble after the bombings).
*Married Delford William "Pete" Shipley . Delford was stationed in England for a period of time during WWII. She was set up on a blind date with Delford. They dated for 3 months, and got married in England. Delford finished serving his time in the Army, while Doris stayed in England. After he was honorably discharged, and sent home, Doris arrived in the United States. They resided in South Connellsville PA their entire lives.
*Delford and Doris had 2 children, Vierma "Bobbi" Shipley, and Delford William Shipley.
*She was fair skinned, and thin.
*Doris visited England several times with her Husband after moving to the States. She also had a Niece , and a Nephew visit her here in PA , as well as her Brother Leonard with his Wife Francis.
*She placed great importance on CLOTHING and dressing nice.
*Doris loved to go to FLEA MARKETS,YARD SALES and THRIFT SHOPS. One of my favorite things to do with my Grandma was go to the thrift shops. Grandpap would drive us around all day going to the Salvation Army, Goodwill, St Vincent DePaul, etc. For years , she never missed a Sunday at the Comet Drive In Flea Market. She would often buy things just because it was a "good deal". She had these items stashed away in a spare bedroom at her house. If you ever needed anything (towels, pots, pans, sheets, etc) you always checked with Grandma first before buying it because chances are, she would have it. My Grandparents always drove me to my monthly Orthodontist appointments in high school, and the trip always entailed a day full of Thrift Store shopping after the doctors.
*Doris always drank TEA. Every day, several times per day, she would sit down to a nice cup of hot tea.
*Some of Grandmas favorite foods were PIZZA, LEMON MERINGUE PIE, and ORANGE MARMALADE. One unusual food she enjoyed was Red Jell-O mixed with Vanilla Pudding. It was actually really good !
*One of her favorite movies was "Dr Zhivago"
* She loved to decorate her Christmas tree. She so many decorations on the tree that you could barely see any green. She would continue to fuss with things, add, and change things daily on the tree right up to Christmas.
*She would do anything for her Grandchildren Chrissy, Lisa, and Brian, and absolutely adored her Great Grand Daughter April. She gave them all anything they wanted, and was definitely a Grandma that spoiled her Grandchildren.
*I was very close to my Grandmother. We talked on the phone several times a week, and saw one another at least once a week all of her life. Her and my Grandfather were always there for me. If I was sick and needed picked up from school, to take me to the doctors, to babysit me, they were there for dance recitals, when my Daughter was born, etc.
*Doris died 1-24-1996 at home at 1644 Hyndman Street South Connellsville PA after a long battle with Breast Cancer. She is buried at Greenridge Memorial Park, Connellsville PA.
