Obituary of a Former Resident
Roy Cross, son of Luther and Callie M. Cross, was born on January 13, 1885, at Beloit, Kansas. When he was about fifteen years old, the family moved to Downs, Kansas, where he attended public school and business college. When living in Downs, he united with the Methodist Church and was an active worker among the younger members of the congregation. He never wearied in work with the church until his health failed him.
He continued to work on the home farm until the fall of 1909 when he emigrated to Fergus county, Montana, and took a homestead. In 1913 he was married to Miss Alma C. Hill and they made their home hear Denton. In 1921 they moved to Denton where Mr. Cross became manager of the Farmers Elevator which position he held until 1933 when his health failed. In that year the family moved to Grandview, Wash., where he resided until the time of his death on Sunday, July 30.
Besides his parents mentioned above, he is survived by his widow, five children, Mrs. Lawrence Barnhart, Donald Keith, and Jackie of Yakima, and Kenneth of Ellensburg, Wash, four brothers, Claude of Yakima, Earl of Blythe, Calif., Clyde of Fargo, N.D., and Ralph of Ellensburg; and one sister, Mrs. Matt Reichmuth, of Denton.
He was for years a victim of a dread disease which relentlessly sapped his strength and vitality leaving him at last paralyzed and helpless. All this he bore with patience and uncomplainingly and was an inspiration to those near him.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday morning, August 2, from the Haskins funeral home in Grandview. The Reverend Mr. Hammond of Sunnyside officiated. The Grandview Masonic Lodge conducted the rites at the grave and burial was made in the Grandview cemetery.
Build me more stately mansions, O my soul, As the swift seasons roll!
Leave thy low-vaulted past,
Let each new temple, nobler than the last Shut thee from heaven with a dome more vast Till thou at length art free Leaving thine outgrown shell by life's unresting sea.
Thank you. This is from my great grandmother's clippings collection. Linda Morice
