John Calvin Cate was born on July 19,1866 in Llano County, Texas to Levi Munroe Cate and Nancy Elizabeth Tow. He had nine brothers and sisters; William Israel(1858), James Wesley{1860), Mary Jane(1863-1863), Frances 'Frank' Marion(1868), Margaret Ellen(1870), Hester Ann(1872), Andrew Jackson(1876), Levi Munroe Jr(1879-1879) and Sidney McClay(1883).

On Feburary 20,1887, John married Mary Elizabeth Willbern. She was also called Mollie. They had nine children; Johnnie Columbus(1887), Mary A.E.(1889), Maggie Rosalee(1891), Elise(1893), David Roy(1895), Lena Glenora(1897), Oscar(1901)), Myrtle(1902), and Flora Lucille(1905).

John's father, Levi died in 1887 and was laid to rest at Baby Head Cemetery, Llano County, Texas. Then in 1900, his mother Nancy Elizabeth died. She was laid to rest next to her husband.

But John's sadness did not end there, for in 1894, his daughter Mary A.E., who was 5, died. John & Mollie had a son, Oscar, in 1901 who only live 5 days. Then in 1908, their daughter, Elsie, who was 15, died. Their daughter Myrtle, who was 10, died in 1912.

In 1920 they were living in San Saba County, Texas. John and Mollie still had one daughter, Flora Lucille, still living at home. Their daughter, Lena and her husband, Roy C Rutland, were also living with them. Lena died that year, from blood poisoning. Her twin boys, Wade and Wayne, were one week old the day she died.

In 1924, Mary 'Mollie' died. She was laid to rest in Big Sand Hill Cemetery, Lampasas County, Texas.

In 1930, John is living with his daughter, Flora Lucille and her husband Calvin O Jones, in San Angelo, Tom Green County, Texas. Living in the same household are Wade and Wayne Rutland, Lena's children.

Some time after 1930, John married a lady named Kate. All I know about her at this time is she was born in 1882.

John Calvin died on April 5,1956 in San Angelo, Texas. He was laid to rest in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens, San Angelo, Tom Green Co, Texas.

He was a farmer by trade all his life. He had a hard life that was filled with sadnesss, but also was filled with a lot of joy from his other chilren; Johnny Columbus, Maggie Rosalee, David Roy, and Flora Lucille, and all of his grand children. He was loved by all who knew him, and he is greatly missed.
