It has been believed that Josiah married Elmina Malone in Wellsville, Ohio, which is in Columbiana County, Ohio. His newspaper obit reads, "He leaves a wife, to whom he was married at Wellsville O., April 24, 1838." However, there is a note in the records of "Brooke County, (West) Virginia Marriages" that shows that Josiah Caughey and Elmira Malcolm (sic) were married on April 24, 1838 (note Brooke County, (West) Virginia Marriages 1797 to 1899) The county seat is Wellsburg (noted for "marryin' parsons") which is between Washington County, PA and Steubenville, Ohio, and is located in the northern panhandle of West Virginia. Elmina Malone was born in Steubenville, Jefferson County, Ohio, on May 27, 1817. She died on April 13, 1904, in Denver, Colorado, possibly living with her son Leonzo who lived in Denver for the 1900 Census of Colorado. She was buried on April 18, 1904, next to her husband.
