Birth: Jun. 1, 1889
Washington County
Kansas, USA
Death: Oct. 30, 1918
San Francisco
San Francisco County
California, USA

Daughter of Harvey Leigh Shatto & Sarah Miranda Boyer.

Married Roly Hendricks Dampier March 12, 1905, in San Jose, Santa Clara County, California

Four Children:
Gerald Homer: November 8, 1905
Lucille Elaine: March 26, 1907
Burton Roly: December 4, 1908
Edith Lurline: May 19, 1914

In 1891 she, her older sister Jennie and younger brother Carl moved with their parents from Linn, Kansas - part of a great exodus of related families to the west coast. The family first lived in Columbia County, Oregon, and by 1900 were in the city of Santa Clara, California.

Her marriage brought together families of quite different regional cultures and outlooks. Her husband, Roly, was from a long line of Southerners and hers from the North. Nonetheless she was integrated into the large extended Dampier clan.

She became quite close to her mother-in-law, Pope Dampier, and was converted to LDS to which her mother-in-law had also converted. She got the children baptized in the faith and also very concerned about their education put them into a pre-school at San Jose State.

One memory her daughter Lucille had of pre-school was a program they put on for parents. They came into the hall holding hands with another student and she entered holding the hand of a black boy. Her father was not at all pleased. Florence told him, "Oh Roly, he's just a little boy!". These were lessons she imparted that carried on into Lucille's later life.

Her daughter Lucille said that as a little girl she was always so proud to be seen with such a beautiful mother.

Her husband Roly was a skilled joiner, door and sash man and a specialist at setting planing blades. He always made good wages. He moved around quite a bit and the family lived variously in San Jose, Stockton, Portland and after her death in Occidental, California.

She became ill and died very young in Lane Hospital, San Francisco. Her death was very traumatic for her young children who at times remained with Roly or lived with relatives as he moved around the west coast.
