Arleen C. Bailey Battle Creek Arleen C. (Schaffer) Bailey, 86, of the Urbandale area of Battle Creek, MI, passed away quietly at the home of her son in DeWitt, MI on Saturday, June 27, 2009. She was born June 22, 1923 in Denver, CO the daughter of Frederick Herman Schaffer and Anna Marie (Hoelle) Schaffer. She was a 1940 graduated of Golden High School in Golden, CO and later attended KCC in Battle Creek. Arleen was a wedding floral designer for Capital Florist for 25 yrs, retiring in 1969. She had a self-employed cleaning service here in Battle Creek cleaning homes for 10 yrs. During WW II, she was employed by Boeing in Wichita, Kansas for 3 yrs. in the tool design department. She married the love of her life Louis R. "Dick" Bailey on January 24, 1947 in Battle Creek, MI; however Dick passed away in September of 2000. She is survived by two sons: Larry R. & Terri Bailey of DeWitt, MI; Ray & Debra Bailey of East Jordan, MI; Niece: Cindy Schillinger of Colorado & Hawaii; a special friend: Carl Ayres of Battle Creek, MI; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was a 1940 graduated from Golden (Colorado) High School, and had a job on a county newspaper in Jefferson Co. Republican in Golden before high school graduation, then took many classes at Kellogg Comm. College in Battle Creek. Although she was born in Denver, CO she lived in Wheat Ridge, CO; then moved to Wichita, KS then returned to Wheat Ridge for a short time before coming to Battle Creek in the late 1946. As an avocation, she had been a free lance writer and has had many writings published in Saturday Evening Post, Mature Living, Country, Scene Magazine, a Baptist Church publication and the Battle Creek Enquirer. She enjoyed reading, crafts, and totally enjoyed her family and grandchildren. Arleen enjoyed playing euchre and Skip Bo, dining out, watching and feeding the birds, squirrels and yard animals. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Louis R. "Dick" Bailey, and her brother: Richard Schaffer(1989). She was a faithful member of Redemption Lutheran Church where she was a former Altar Guild leader, member of the Ladies' Guild where she was the former President, Vice President, and Secretary; former Secretary of the church Board of Directors, and chairman of the Building Committee. She was a member of the Augusta (MI) Writers' Circle, the American Legion # 298 Auxiliary, Life member of the Disabled American Veteran #121 Auxiliary, the National Honor Society, the Veteran of Foreign Wars #565 Auxiliary, and the AARP. Visitation will be held at Bachman Hebble Funeral Service July 1, 2009 Wednesday from 2:00 until 7:00 p.m. where the family will be present. Funeral services commemorating the Life of Arleen Bailey will be held Thursday 11:00 a.m. at Redemption Lutheran Church 2450 West Michigan Avenue with Pastor Karl N. Strenge of Redemption Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will follow at the Floral Lawn Memorial Gardens. Memorial tributes may be made to Redemption Lutheran Church.
