Mrs. Martha J. Hartpence Dead
The death of Mrs. Martha J. Hartpence occurred at her home, north of Mt. Gilead, on Thursday evening of last week. She was 75 years of age and had been a resident of Morrow County for a number of years. Her late husband, Joseph Hartpence, whose death occurred about five years ago, was one of the most prosperous farmers of this vicinity. One son, W. E. Hartpence, is the present Treasurer of Morrow County, while the other son, John, resides on the home farm in Congress Township. The funeral was held in the M. E. church in Mt. Gilead on Sunday afternoon.
Obituary: Mrs. Martha Hartpence, daughter of John and Dorcas Iden, was born Jan. 16, 1831 in Loudon County, Virginia; died at her residence in Congress Township, Dec. 14, 1905, aged 74 years, 10 months and 28 days. When but 5 years of age she came with her family to Knox County, Ohio, and she shortly after removed to Congress Township, Morrow county. She was united in marriage to Joseph Hartpence, February 24, 1857; two sons, Willis E., now Treasurer of Morrow County, and John , who resided at home and cared for his aged mother, were the only children. She leaves, besides these two devoted sons, one sister, three brothers, seven grand-children and many relatives and friends to mourn the loss of one whom they had learned to love. Mrs. Hartpence was converted when by 16 years of age and united with the Methodist Episcopal Church at Mt. Tabor, where she remained a faithful and consistent member until her death. During the past three years she had been partially paralyzed, having no use of her lower limbs; she thus became a constant charge upon her son who ministered unto her as tenderly and faithfully as a loving mother would minister to a helpless child. The last few months were months of intense suffering which was borne in patience and with Christian resignation. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. B. J. Mills in Trinity M. E. church of this city on Sunday afternoon, Dec. 17th and the body was laid to rest by the side of her husband in our beautiful River Cliff cemetery.
