Obituary from The Morrow County Sentinel dated August 9, 1900:

Joseph Hartpence: A Well Known Citizen of Morrow County Answers to the Summons of Death.

Joseph Hartpence, aged 70 years, died at his home in Congress Township, Sunday, August 5th, at 2:30 p.m. The funeral services were conducted at the Trinity M. E. church in this city, Tuesday, August 7th, at 11 o'clock a.m.
Mr. Hartpence was well known throughout Morrow County, and his jovial disposition under all circumstances won for him a host of friends among those with whom he came in contact. Though robust and rugged in appearance he had not been in perfect health for a number of years, having imperfect circulation of the blood. On account of this trouble his limbs were often so numb as to be almost entirely devoid of feeling. It was this condition, indeed, that caused the accident 18 months ago, which was the primary cause of his death.
During the cold weather at that time, Mr. Hartpence, to keep his feet warm in bed, employed a heated flat iron. A toe of one of his feet came in contact with the hot iron, and though it was severely burned, caused no pain; in fact, he was not aware of the burn until the following night when he removed his stocking. Later on the wound became serious, the bone of the injured member rotting away. Amputation followed, but this was unavailing as blood poisoning then developed. Though he had suffered for some time with this trouble he was able to be about until a short time ago. After being confined to his home he declined rapidly, his death occurring even before a number of his friends knew of his illness.
The deceased was a soldier of the Civil war, having enlisted, with two brothers in Co. C of the 136th O.V.I. During his active life among us, he has been an honest and industrious citizen, and the sunshine of his deposition has brightened the life of all who were associated with him.
