Born in Cherry Log, July 2, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Charles Brownlow Hice and Alice Emma Searcy Hice. A graduate of Gilmer County High School, she was inducted in to the Athletic Hall of Fame there for her basketball prowess. She had lived in Blackshear since 1947.
She served as an aircraft riveter during World War II at Bell Aircraft Corp. in Marietta, 1944-45, and was recently a participant in the Rosie the Riveter Association. She completed her bachelor's degree at the University of Georgia in 1946 and taught school in Blackshear for over 30 years, until her retirement.
She was the author of Volumes II and III of the History of Pierce County, Georgia, completing the work of her late husband (married 1947), Dean Carl Broome Sr., who had authored Volume I and who pre-deceased her in 1995.
She was an active member of First Baptist Church in Blackshear. She was a lover of poetry and was well-known among her students and friends for her by-heart memory of many favorite poems. She was a founding member of the Lakeview Golf Club, where she enjoyed golfing for many years.
She was preceded in death by brothers, Ewiel Edmond Hice, Margie Jay Dee Hice, Charles Nathaniel Hice and Freeland Eugene Hice and by sisters, Aubania Cecilo Hice and Willie George Hice McCorkle.
Survivors include her brothers Lt. Col. Joseph Spurgeon "Joe" Hice, Miami and Thomas Searcy "Tom" and Betty Hice of Bethlehem; her son, Dean Carl Broome Jr., Saint Petersburg, Russia; and her daughters, Amelia Janet Broome Silberman (husband John), Wilmington, MA and Alice Lurline Broome Jeffers (husband Keith), Waycross.
Visitation was 6-8 p.m. Monday, April 20, at the funeral home. A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 21, from the Blackshear First Baptist Church.
Following the service, memorialization was by cremation with her ashes interred in the family lot at the Blackshear City Cemetery.
