Rachel Bown was born in July, 1842, in Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. She was about the fifth of eight children born to David Bown and Sarah Lea.
She married James C. Baines and had eight children:

Miriam Eva b. Jul 1867 m. McCausland
Joseph Edwin b. Aug 1869 m. Coretta ?
William James b. Mar 1872 m. Mary Mae Balsley ?
Robert b. abt Oct 1874 died age 8 mos.
Rachel b. Nov. 1878 unmarried
Cora R. b. Nov 1880 m. Perkins
Lillian G. b. Dec 1883 m. Bailey
The date of death has been found to be Jan 7, 1912. She was tragically widowed about the age of 40 and survived her husband by 30 years.
She is believed to be buried in Homewood with location of parents and other children. No stone has been found.
