Richard Alway served as a Private in Company E of the 5th Michigan Volunteer Infantry Regiment in the American Civil War.
He was shot in his right arm on July 2, 1863, the second day of the Battle of Gettysburg. His arm was later amputated, and he died on July 27.
He was initially buried in Michael Fiscel's clover field.
He was originally from St. Clair County, Michigan, and was 44 years of age at the time of his enlistment.
