Eunice Assmann was born on February 2, 1925 to Charles and Julia (Dressen) Miller on the family farm one half mile west of Earling, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Earling and graduated from St. Joseph's High School in 1942. She received normal training and began teaching country school.
On September 12, 1944, Eunice was united in marriage to Norbert "Nub" Assmann at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Earling, Iowa. They were blessed with eleven children: David, Darlene, Roger, Peggy, Pat, Beverly, Duane, Don, Larry, Norma, and Scott. After their marriage, they farmed near Dunlap, spent four years on a farm north of Harlan, then moved to their farm west of Panama where they spent their lives.
Eunice enjoyed raising her children and helping her husband on the farm for forty-six years. In addition, she had a large garden and liked to can the vegetables and donate some of them to the Catholic School. In 1969, Eunice and Norbert purchased a café and bar in Panama and operated "Nub's Pub" in addition to farming. On September 12, 1982, the pub was destroyed by fire. It was rebuilt and reopened on February 1, 1983. In 1990, the couple retired from farming and moved into Panama four years later. They also celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary in 1994 and after her husband's death the following year, was able to stay in their home.
Eunice remained a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and was a member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Court St. Katherine, #266 of Earling.
In November of last year, Eunice went to visit her son in Florida where she became ill and died peacefully, after having a visit from all of her children, on Tuesday, February 11, 2014, having attained the age of eighty-nine years and nine days. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Norbert, grandson Justin Assmann, sisters Shirley Lefeber and Vergie Goeres, and brother Tony Miller.
