Ashlee Shaner died at the age of 16.

On May 17, 2000, Shaner was killed instantly while driving her car on Gilman Springs Road near the Golden Era Productions facility which is located on the Scientology international headquarters known as Gold Base in Hemet, Riverside County, California. Her car hit a tractor driven by Thomas Nove of Moreno Valley. Her sister Klarissa Shaner was present in the vehicle and survived the crash. Her mother, Michelle Shaner, was following in a car behind when the accident occurred. According to the California Highway Patrol, "there were no warning lights, flares or construction workers to guide motorists around the tractor." Nove was at the time employed by contracting firm TaseCo Corp. that was doing work for Scientology at the Golden Era Productions facility.

She attended Calvary Baptist Christian School in Banning, California. At the time of her death she was a sophomore at Calvary Baptist Christian School and a volunteer with the Banning Police Department.

She was survived by her mother Michelle Shaner, her sister Klarissa Shaner, and uncle and aunt Police Sergeant Mike Shubin and Debbie Shubin.

A funeral service was held May 22, 2000 at First Baptist Church in Banning, California. According to Banning Police Commander Marshall Palmer, approximately 500 people came to the 90 minute long funeral service.

On July 29, 2000, The Press-Enterprise newspaper of Riverside, California reported that a memorial on Gilman Springs Road was erected which had her name displayed on it.

Thomas Nove plead not guilty in an arraignment on May 9, 2001 to a charge of vehicular manslaughter, a misdemeanor.
