John Francis Arensberg entered service on May 12, 1979 as an officer in the U.S. Army. He had lived in Michigan, Massachusetts, Ohio, and Virginia, in addition to other places. His last assignment was with the Defense Mapping Agency, later known as the National Imagery and Mapping Agency in Bethesda, Montgomery Co, MD. After retirement from military service on January 27, 1993, he entered Federal Civil service. Among other assignments, he was the Branch Chief of the Sub-Sahara Africa Branch within the Middle East/Africa Center. Shortly before his death, he was promoted to a position as a Branch Chief within the Regional Analysis Division.
