George was the eldest son of Hyrum and "Nellie" CalderJ . He died just prior to his 12th birthday. Photo: 1910.
"I remember the night my oldest brother George died. He was just going to turn twelve when he died in February. He had been sick and stayed home from school that day. Father came home with some candy. As we sat around the table father asked me to take a piece into George in the front room. Too sick to care, he said he didn't want it.
That night there was so much confusion in the other room and being rather nervous I couldn't sleep. I called to mother who came in and covered me over. The next morning, mother with red swollen eyes said our brother George had died during the night.
They kept him in the front room on boards and the room was kept freezing cold. It was the practice then to have friends or the elders sit with the dead all night, to guard the bodies from cats and dogs. They didn't let us kids go into the room until father had lifted George into his casket. He had just brushed his hair. I can still see father standing with the family, brush in his hand and tears gushing down his checks as we, George's younger brothers and sister in fear and wonderment looked on.
After George's death, Hamilton was afraid to go out to the wood pile to bring in the wood. Mother said she took us all,(Grant the baby then) and went to her home in Salt Lake."
